Shane attacked Maggie, throwing her into chairs, pushing her up against the wall and choking her in front of her daughter, Memphis.
After I confirmed one of the housemates had called the police, I then continued to document the abuse — my instincts as a photojournalist began kicking in. If Maggie couldn’t leave, neither could I.
Eventually, the police arrived. I was fortunate that the responding officers were well educated on First Amendment laws and did not try to stop me from taking pictures. At first, Maggie did not want to cooperate with the officers who led Shane away in handcuffs, but soon after, she changed her mind and gave a statement about the incident. Shane pled guilty to a domestic violence felony and is currently in prison in Ohio.
The incident raised a number of ethical questions. I’ve been castigated by a number of anonymous internet commenters who have said that I should have somehow physically intervened between the two. Their criticism counters what actual law enforcement officers have told me — that physically intervening would have likely only made the situation worse, endangering me, and further endangering Maggie.

    A YEAR WITHOUT MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES.....IN ARIZONA... →

i would have loved to hear more from students who go to these schools in tucson because they’re the one’s whose lives are affected by the withholding of mexican-american history….

teaching mexican-american history classes is no more divisive than teaching about slavery….

Twenty-five years ago, the new Fox Network began airing their first prime time sitcom, Married… with Children. The show, about a dysfunctional working-class family in Chicago, ran for eleven seasons until 1997. The series went into syndication beginning in 1991 and reruns can still be seen.
But just because the series went out of production in 1997 in the United States doesn’t mean it’s passé. The concept, characters, and even scripts from the original Fox series have been remade in countries all over the world.
This is what “Married With Children” looks like in other countries: Married… With Children Around the World

WOMEN HAVE BEEN PLAYING DUAL ROLES FOR AGES... →

A great article on NPR talks about how women of today are fighting the fight for gender (and overall) equality…..and emphasizes the fact that women can never be both feminine and strong….unfortunate, but i think it’s true…

“It all comes back to the old problem of equality never quite being as close as it seems. Women may be moving into brave new roles, but they’re not necessarily doing so in community with each other or with a clearly articulated politics to support the changes they’re going through. The conservative backlash against what many in my generation assumed would always be our right — sexual freedom and reproductive choice — is daunting and dismaying. The past decade’s economic downturns have pushed many women into poverty even as others achieve new heights.”

The Chinese have a long tradition of eating dogs. But increasingly, dogs are becoming pets. And animal rescue groups have taken to saving truckloads of dogs on the side of the road before they reach the butcher’s shop.

This 14-Year-Old Girl Just Bought A House In Florida
When a 14-year old can afford to buy a home, does that mean home prices have hit bottom? Willow Tufano is a child of the housing collapse. Her real estate agent mom scrapes together a living in Florida by selling foreclosed properties. Willow found her own niche scavenging abandoned washes, dryers and furniture from her mother’s properties and selling them on Craigslist. In just six months, Willow saved enough money to buy a two-bedroom fixer upper for $12,000. -Chana Joffe-Walt (Photo by Chana Joffe-Walt/NPR)
